Here are the cities where all of the tech talent wants to work

Written by on January 26, 2016

Stockholm isn’t the only city that is attracting developers and engineers. Here are the cities where most people in tech wants to live and work.

Sweden’s capitol is still leading the way, but a lot of people also want to work in Malmö and Linköping.

“I don’t think anyone is surprised by the fact that Stockholm is the most popular city, but there is an apparent trend that people also want to settle in other parts of the country”, Robert Areno, CEO of the recruitment company Demando says.

The company has compiled data from its user base to determine where in Sweden its users want to live. Robert Areno thinks that the difficult housing situation is an important factor behind peoples willingness to work in cities other than Stockholm.

Here are the other cities where the most people would like to work:

1. Malmö

The city takes second place after Stockholm. Some contributing factors are the vicinity to Lund and Copenhagen, lower rents than Stockholm and Gothenburg, and the successful incubator Minc. One out of five of Demando’s candidates wants to find their dreamjob here.

2. Norrköping and Linköping

The third most popular area is Östgötaslätten, or the East Gothland Plains. 19 percent of Demando’s job searchers are looking for jobs here. The University of Linköping is one of the most tech focused universities in the country, and several large corporation have offices there, for example Saab and Siemens.

One of Swedens largest science parks, Mjärdevi, as well as the incubator Lead, are based in Linköping.

3. Jönköping

The college in Jönköping and the county’s efforts to lift the entrepreneurial spirit of the city, are among the reasons why Jönköping makes it in the top 4 and 9 percent of Demando’s users want to live there. Breakit visited the city in the fall and met with a lot of interesting companies (article in Swedish).

Cities that are lagging behind are Västerås, Örebro and Gävle. Relatively few people in tech are looking for jobs there.
