The game developer Zordix from the city of Umeå in Northern Sweden invests strategically on Nintendo as a platform. While other game developers do what they can to get attraction in the huge flood of games for iOS or Android, Zordix has chosen a different road to success. On the Nintendo eShop it is far easier to reach the players because the number of titles is much smaller, says Matti Larsson, CEO of Zordix.
After developing five games for Nintendo’s portable game consoles 3DS and DSi, Zordix is ready for the next big step. In the autumn of 2014 the new title Aqua Moto Racing Utopia will be launched for Nintendo’s Wii U system.
“Choosing the Wii U is very enticing”, says Matti Larsson. It allows HD graphics, new features with Nintendo’s Wii U GamePad controller and access to processor power that can handle all the water simulation in the game.
“A good relationship with Nintendo is very important, but to reach out we also have to produce quality work. We must have world-class games, they must maintain the highest level”, Matti Larsson says. He is convinced that also a startup company from a small town can have an international success with a smart strategy.
In early June, at the E3 expo in Los Angeles, the world’s premier trade show for computer and video games, Zordix released news on Aqua Moto Racing Utopia. For a select group of investors and publishers a trailer for the game aroused much interest.
“We see that there is great interest in writing about new Wii U games all over the world”, Matti Larsson says. He explains that another advantages of developing for Nintendo is the small number of journalists dedicated to their platforms. That means it is easier to keep in touch with the most important writers and reach the whole Nintendo community.
The attention for Zordix in international media is good. When the printed version of Pure Nintendo Magazine in June 2014 published a large reportage it was with several full pages of Aqua Moto Racing Utopia, even though the game is not yet released.
“We see that news of the game starts to appear in printed magazines around the world. Although digital marketing is most important for us is it fun to see news also in print”, Matti Larsson says.
Even if growth is slightly slower than expected for the Wii U, Matti Larsson is optimistic about the future for the platform.
“Wii U games such as the recently released Mario Kart 8 and the upcoming Super Smash Bros. is obviously of great importance for the Wii U as a competitor to Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One,” Matti Larsson says.
It is in any case something Zordix want to contribute to with its strategic focus on games for Nintendo.
