The Great Wild – Fishbrain for hunters

Written by on March 31

The Great Wild is an online hunting club, helping hunters explore the hunting opportunities of the world, log their hunting activities and share and compare with other hunters. The team has been focusing on creating a platform where hunting companies advertise their offers combined with a news feed of hunting-related entertainment. I thought it would be good to have a chat with one of the co-founders, Johan Eldh.

The team consist of Tomas Ohlsson, programmer and Johan Eldh, avid hunter. In addition to the two core members, the team also includes seven specialists with varying levels of engagement.

“The Great Wild is an online hunting club, helping hunters explore the hunting opportunities of the world, log their hunting activities and share and compare with other hunters. Up until now, we’ve focused on the first part of our vision, exploring the great wild, and created a website where hunting companies advertise their offers combined with a newsfeed of hunting-related entertainment.”

Following in the footsteps of Fishbrain

Since launching the service in Scandinavia, their first market, the feedback has been overwhelming and The Great Wild are projecting more than 10% (70 000 – 80 000) of all hunters in Scandinavia to visit them in March.

“We are delighted to see that Fishbrain is doing so well. They launched their service just months after we’ve nailed our vision, and we’ve followed their progress closely. The next step in our business plan is very similar to Fishbrain, though we focus even more on gamifying the hunting experience.”

“Had you asked me two months ago, I wouldn’t have dared say that we aim to have 10 % of the market as registered users, but with the overwhelming success here in Scandinavia, we aim to reach that in 3-5 years. Europe and North America hosts around 20-25 million hunters.”

Now looking for investments

So far, the team has been bootstrapped, but the team is getting ready to accept external financing now. “The extra funds will allow us to accelerate our expansion into the European and North American markets, and be quicker in our response to the users’ needs and desires.”

Johan continues to explain how they’ve tried to keep the process “lean” and focus on their core vision: “There are so many opportunities when it comes to digitalizing the hunting experience, and it’s easy getting carried away and doing too much at the same time. Sticking to The Great Wild’s core vision while being receptive to ideas from employees and users is a difficult balancing act. It’s an ongoing challenge.”

The team is currently focusing on launching their app, which will be the primary tool for logging and gamifying hunting. Johan continues: “The app is in beta-phase right now, and we aim to launch it on the Scandinavian market in August, when the hunting season starts. Parallel to that, we’re working hard to convert our visitors to registered users and monetizing the traffic on thegreatwild.com.”
